ABOUT CARVER FEDERAL SAVINGS BANK
Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Harlem, Carver Federal Savings Bank is the nation’s largest and oldest continually Black-operated bank, a U.S. Treasury certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and federally designated Minority Depository Institution (MDI). For over 75 years, Carver has served the communities of Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens with the conviction that access to quality financial services and real economic opportunity should not be determined by neighborhood or circumstance.
We reinvest more than 70 cents of every deposit dollar back into the communities we serve, 10 points above the CDFI standard. We hold an Outstanding rating on our Community Reinvestment Act examination. We are in a period of deliberate transformation, growing our institution, strengthening our team, and deepening our impact. The leaders who join Carver now will help determine what that next chapter looks like.
|
The Branch Manager is the most consequential leadership role within Carver’s branch network. This person owns the branch as a business, its growth, its culture, its people, and its standing in the community it serves. |
We are looking for a leader with the strategic acumen to run a business, the instinct for building markets, and the ability to develop a team that performs and grows. The Branch Manager at Carver is not a custodian of transactions. They are the senior executive of a financial operation within an institution, responsible for every dimension of branch performance and every dimension of the client experience.
This role demands clarity of thought, strength of character, and a genuine commitment to the financial well-being of the clients and communities Carver was built to serve. If you bring those qualities alongside a proven record of business growth and talent development, Carver offers an opportunity to create impact in banking that few institutions can match.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Experience & Culture of Advice
- Set and sustain a standard of client experience defined by genuine commitment, where every interaction, regardless of account size or transaction type, reflects Carver’s values and the professionalism our clients deserve
- Lead the branch as a financial advisory destination, not a transaction point, ensuring clients leave every interaction better positioned, better informed, and more connected to what Carver can do for them
- Assess client experience performance with rigor, translating NPS results and satisfaction trends into targeted action plans that raise the service standard across the team
- Position Carver’s digital tools as pathways to client empowerment, coaching the team to introduce technology not as a replacement for relationship, but as an extension of it
- Create “Moments That Matter” for every client; intentional, memorable interactions that go beyond the transaction and leave clients feeling seen, valued, and genuinely served by Carver
Business Growth & Revenue Leadership
- Own the branch P&L with full accountability, setting and executing against deposit growth, client acquisition, consumer lending, and fee income objectives aligned to Carver’s enterprise financial plan
- Carry personal production responsibility alongside management duties, this role is expected to open accounts, deepen client relationships, and contribute directly to deposit growth and referral activity
- Take a rigorous, evidence-based approach to branch performance, leveraging the Branch Scorecard and market intelligence to identify growth opportunities, address gaps, and make decisions with the urgency of a business owner
- Develop and maintain a disciplined outbound business development strategy with structured calling cadence, in-market engagement, and active prospect pipeline management that continuously expands the branch’s book of business
- Build and sustain relationships with mission-aligned businesses, schools, nonprofits, civic organizations, and faith institutions that generate deposit growth and community impact in equal measure
- Work across Carver’s lending, deposits, and small business teams to ensure no client need goes unmet and no business opportunity is left on the table
Talent Leadership & Team Development
- Recruit and develop branch talent with the same care and rigor brought to growing the book of business, identifying candidates whose skills, values, and potential align with what Carver is building
- Lead each associate through consistent, structured coaching conversations grounded in individual performance, growth goals, and Carver’s collective results
- Build a universal banking culture across the branch: every associate is expected to engage across the full product suite, spot client opportunities, and contribute to branch growth, not solely their own production numbers
- Hold a consistent standard of performance accountability, delivering feedback with candor and care, and managing the performance range in a way that is firm on expectations, generous with recognition.
- Build a team environment where results and relationships reinforce each other, where associates feel connected to the mission, supported in their careers, and proud of the work
- Create “Moments That Matter” for associates with deliberate acts of recognition, investment, and connection that build a culture where people feel proud of the work and are committed to each other’s success
Operational Integrity & Risk Stewardship
- Maintain a branch operating environment to the highest standard, where compliance is not a separate function from service but is woven into every process, every decision, and every colleague’s daily practice
- Ensure full adherence to all regulatory requirements including CRA, BSA/AML, OFAC, Regulation E, and Carver’s internal policies, sustaining an audit-ready branch as an operational baseline, not a goal
- Exercise sound judgment in managing risk across all branch activity, escalating issues promptly and working with compliance and operations to resolve exceptions with precision and speed
- Deliver clear, accurate, and timely performance reporting to the District Manager, with full transparency on results, risks, and resource needs
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 5+ years of progressive financial services experience with demonstrated leadership of a branch, team, or business unit, and a verifiable record of meeting or exceeding performance goals across growth, service, and operations
- Proven business development capability: the ability to build relationships, pursue prospects, and grow a market through presence, credibility, and consistent follow-through
- A people leadership orientation with specific experience developing talent, managing performance across a range, and building teams that consistently outperform the sum of their parts
- Working knowledge of retail banking regulatory requirements including BSA/AML, CRA, OFAC, and Regulation E, with experience maintaining a compliant branch under regulatory scrutiny
- Strong communication and relationship skills, with the ability to engage clients, institutional partners, community leaders, and associates with equal effectiveness
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent professional experience in lieu of degree will be considered on its merits
- NMLS registration required within 30 days of hire; availability for branch hours including weekends and evenings as business requires
Preferred
- Experience with CDFI lending programs, SBA-backed products, affordable housing finance, community development lending, or comparable mission-driven financial services
- Demonstrated market-building through institutional partnerships with nonprofits, government agencies, faith organizations, or community development corporations
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, or other languages that reflect the communities Carver serves is a meaningful advantage
WHY CARVER
Carver offers something few banking roles can: the ability to see the direct result of your leadership in the community around you. The client who opens her first savings account at your branch. The business owner who secures a microloan through a partnership you built. The colleague who earns a promotion because you put time into their development. These are not distant outcomes. They happen in Carver branches, every week, because of the leaders who run them.
We offer a competitive total rewards package that includes performance-based incentive opportunity, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, and paid time off. What we also offer is harder to find: work that matters, in communities that feel it.
